CompTIA Statement on U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement

Oct 2, 2018

WASHINGTON (Oct. 1, 2018) — CompTIA, the leading trade association for the global technology industry, released the following statement from CompTIA Executive Vice President for Public Advocacy Elizabeth Hyman regarding the reported agreement between the U.S., Mexico and Canada to modernize the North American Free Trade Agreement.

"CompTIA welcomes the agreement between the U.S., Mexico and Canada on a trade pact that can modernize NAFTA and bring trade among our North American allies into the 21st Century.

“Vibrant trade with Canada and Mexico is vital to the U.S. tech industry. In 2017, U.S. tech product exports to Canada and Mexico totaled $67.4 billion, and tech service exports totaled $7.8 billion in 2016. That represents nearly a quarter of all U.S. tech exports. Additionally, 225,000 U.S. jobs are supported by tech exports to Mexico and Canada, which surpasses any other market.

“We are pleased to see that the new agreement addresses key pieces of digital trade that are crucial to ensuring our trade pacts going forward reflect the modern realities of moving data across borders and protecting an open internet. We look forward to continuing to work with the Administration and Congress on this important agreement.”
