New Report Offers Details on Technology Industry in Maine

CompTIA Cyberstates 2020™ reveals tech sector’s impact

Augusta, Maine – Information technology (IT) employment in Maine totals nearly 38,000 workers, according to Cyberstates 2020™, the definitive guide to the U.S. tech industry, occupations and trends published annually by CompTIA, the leading trade association for the global IT industry.

Net tech employment stood at 37,815 at the end of 2019, accounting for an estimated 5.5% of the state’s total workforce.[1] In 2019 tech-related employment grew by 1,500 new jobs, a 4.1% increase over the prior year. No other industry in Maine added more jobs last year. The percentage increase was the fourth highest among the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Between 2010 and 2019 net tech employment grew by 7,309 jobs, an increase of 24% There are 2,802 tech business establishments in Maine.

The tech sector accounts for 5.2% of the state’s economy, or $3.1 billion.

The estimated median tech occupation wage in Maine is $74,725, 83% higher than the median national for all occupations in the state.

“Looking ahead, the need for professionals from all backgrounds to develop, support, and protect these technologies will continue to grow,” Thibodeaux added. “In these trying times it is often difficult to think beyond today, but we must remain committed to preparing the workforce of tomorrow for success in whatever the future may hold.”

Cyberstates 2020 is based on CompTIA’s analysis of data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI), Burning Glass Technologies, Hoovers and other sources.
