New Report Offers Details on Technology Industry in New Mexico

CompTIA Cyberstates 2017™ finds state is home to nearly 3,000 tech businesses and 47,000-plus tech professionals

Santa Fe, N.M. – Technology industry employment in New Mexico was essentially flat in 2016, according to Cyberstates 2017™, the definitive annual analysis of the nation’s tech industry released today by CompTIA, the world’s leading technology association.

The tech industry workforce expanded by an estimated 139 jobs, an increase of less than 1 percent. New Mexico is home to an estimated 47,252 tech industry workers.

Technology occupations across all other industries in New Mexico – the second component of the tech workforce – reached an estimated 36,900 in 2016.

The tech sector accounts for an estimated 7.9 percent ($7.4 billion) of the overall state economy.

The annualized average wage for a tech industry worker in New Mexico was an estimated $85,200 in 2016, 101 percent higher than the average state wage ($42,500).

Other Key Findings

  • An estimated 2,985 tech business establishments are located in New Mexico.
  • Among the leading tech occupations in the state are engineers (3,400), computer user support specialists (2,840) and electrical engineers (2,000).
  • The strongest year-over-year job growth occurred in the categories of R&D and testing labs (+ 2.7 percent) and computer systems design and IT services (+ 1.3 percent).
  • Employers across New Mexico posted job openings for about 2,000 technology positions in Q4 2016.
